Batteries
Battery jumpstarts and replacement.
A dead battery does not have to end the day. We can jump it where it sits, or replace it and have you moving again.
Jump or replace
Two ways out of a dead battery.
As one of our roadside assistance services, we can replace or jumpstart your car's dead battery. A licensed driver is sent out and will either provide a jumpstart or fit a new battery, changing it out on the spot.
Why it matters who does it
Jumping a car wrong can cost you an ECU.
We are equipped with jumper boxes, so a dead battery can be started regardless of where the car is parked. It is worth saying that jumping a vehicle has to be done correctly — done incorrectly it can damage the car’s computer, which is a far more expensive problem than the battery was.
When a jump will not hold
A battery that dies twice is not a flat battery.
If a car starts on a jump and dies again shortly after, the battery is usually not the fault — it is more often the alternator failing to recharge it. Worth knowing before paying for a replacement battery that will be flat again by the end of the week.
Battery or alternator
What happens after the jump tells you.
A jump start puts enough charge in to turn the engine over. What happens next is the diagnosis. If the car runs and keeps running, the battery was drained — lights left on, a door not shut, a short trip that never let it recover — and it will likely charge back up as you drive. If it starts and then dies again within minutes, the charging system is not doing its job, and a second jump buys the same few minutes as the first. Either way, get it somewhere it can be tested rather than relying on repeat jumps. A battery that has been run flat several times rarely comes back to full health even once the underlying fault is found.
Common questions
Questions about this.
Will a jump start fix it, or do I need a battery?
A jump gets the engine running. Whether it stays running is the real test: if the car starts and then dies again shortly after, the battery is not holding charge or the alternator is not charging it, and a second jump only buys the same few minutes. A jump that holds usually means the battery was drained rather than dead.
