Wrecker service
Wrecker and heavy-duty towing in Dallas.
For the vehicles a standard tow truck cannot take — box trucks, buses, RVs and tractor units — dispatched on the same 24-hour line.
What needs a wrecker
Weight is what decides it.
A standard tow truck is built for cars and light pickups. Once the vehicle is a box truck, a bus, a motorhome or a tractor unit, the job needs a wrecker: heavier boom, heavier winch, and a chassis rated to lift it without being dragged around by it. Putting the wrong truck on a heavy recovery is how both vehicles end up damaged.
What to tell dispatch
Three things decide which truck we send.
What the vehicle is, roughly what it weighs, and what the access is like. A tractor unit on a hard shoulder and the same unit in a soft yard are different jobs needing different equipment. Getting that right on the phone is the difference between one truck arriving and two.
Around the clock
Heavy breakdowns do not keep hours.
Commercial vehicles break down on schedules, which means at night and at weekends as often as not. Wrecker work runs through the same 24-hour dispatch as everything else, so there is one number whichever kind of truck you turn out to need.
Access
Where the vehicle sits changes the job.
Weight decides which truck, but access decides how the recovery is done. The same tractor unit on a hard shoulder and in a soft yard are two different jobs: one is a straightforward hookup, the other may need winching before anything can be lifted, and possibly room to work that is not there. Overhead clearance, the surface underfoot, how much space there is to bring a truck alongside, and whether the vehicle can roll at all are all worth describing on the call. It is the difference between one truck arriving prepared and a second having to be sent. If you can send a photograph of the position, that answers more than a description usually can.
Common questions
Questions about this.
Is heavy hauling your main business?
No — most of the work is cars and light pickups, and that is what the fleet is built around. Heavy and wrecker work is genuinely offered rather than advertised for its own sake, which is worth saying plainly: if you are moving a tractor unit, describe the job properly on the call so dispatch can tell you straight away whether it is one we should take.
What should I have ready when I call about a heavy vehicle?
What the vehicle is, roughly what it weighs, whether it still rolls, and what the access is like — surface underfoot, overhead clearance, and how much room there is to bring a truck alongside. A photograph of how it is sitting answers more than a description usually can. Those details decide which truck comes out, and getting them right is the difference between one truck arriving prepared and a second having to follow.
