Flatbed towing

Flatbed towing in Dallas.

All four wheels off the ground, for the vehicles that should not be towed on two — dispatched from the same 24-hour line.

Why a flatbed

Some vehicles should not be towed on two wheels.

A wheel-lift tow picks up one end of the car and rolls it on the other. For most front-wheel-drive cars that is fine. For all-wheel-drive and many four-wheel-drive vehicles, rolling on two wheels can damage the drivetrain, and the repair costs far more than the tow did. A flatbed carries the whole vehicle on the deck, so nothing turns that should not.

When to ask for one

Low, damaged, or worth a lot.

Ask for a flatbed for all-wheel-drive vehicles, low sports cars that would scrape on a ramp angle, cars with damaged wheels or suspension after an accident, classics, and anything you would rather not see bounced along the road behind a truck. If you are not sure, say what the vehicle is and dispatch can tell you.

Non-runners

It does not need to start.

A flatbed is often the simplest way to move a car that will not run, because the winch pulls it up onto the deck rather than relying on it to drive on. Say whether the wheels still turn and whether the steering is locked, since both change how it is loaded.

On the call

What helps dispatch send the right truck.

The make and model settles most of it, because that tells dispatch whether the vehicle is all-wheel drive and roughly how low it sits. After that, the useful details are where the car is and what is around it. A flatbed is longer than a wheel-lift truck and needs room to tilt the deck, so a tight parking garage, a low ceiling, or a car wedged between two others is worth mentioning up front. Say where it is going too. A flatbed tow to a shop across Dallas and one to your driveway are planned differently, and knowing both ends of the trip is what makes the quote you hear on the phone the one you pay.

Common questions

Questions about this.

Does my car need a flatbed?

If it is all-wheel drive, very low, damaged at the wheels or suspension, or something you would not want rolling on the road, yes. Most front-wheel-drive cars can be towed either way. Tell dispatch the make and model and they will say which.

Can a flatbed get into a parking garage?

Often not. A flatbed is long and needs room and height to tilt the deck. If the car is in a garage or a tight lot, say so on the call — it may need moving out with a smaller truck first.
