Motorcycle towing

Motorcycle towing in Dallas.

Bikes moved on proper straps and wheel chocks, not tied down with whatever happens to be on the truck.

Why it is different

A bike does not tow like a car.

A motorcycle cannot be hooked up and pulled. It has to ride on a deck, held upright in a wheel chock and strapped down at points that will not bend a fairing, scratch the tank or compress the forks too far. Done badly, a bike can arrive with more damage than it left with.

After a crash

Take care of yourself first.

If the bike went down, get yourself checked before you think about the motorcycle. Call 911 if anyone is hurt. Once that is handled, a tow can take the bike to a shop, your home, or wherever the insurance adjuster needs to see it.

What to tell dispatch

Size, condition, and where it is.

Say what the bike is — a sport bike, a cruiser, a touring bike or a dirt bike — and whether it is upright or down. Mention damage to the wheels or forks, because a bike that will not roll straight needs to be loaded differently. If it has hard bags or a top case, say so; they change where straps can go.

Your gear

What happens to your helmet and bags.

Riders often forget that they are stranded with the bike and everything on it. Helmets, jackets and anything in the saddlebags can usually travel with the motorcycle, but secure them or take them with you rather than assuming they will be fine loose on the deck. If you need a ride as well as a tow, ask about it when you call, because there is not always room in the cab and it is better to know before the truck leaves than when it arrives.

Common questions

Questions about this.

Will my motorcycle be scratched or damaged in the tow?

It should not be. The bike rides upright on a flat deck, held in a wheel chock and strapped at points that do not press on paint or fairings. Tell dispatch about any existing damage so it is known before loading.

Can you tow a motorcycle that will not roll?

Yes, though it is a different loading job. Say on the call if a wheel is locked or bent, or the forks are damaged, so the driver comes prepared.
